Biographical SketchesDr. Eric W. AustinEric W. Austin, PhD, DABT, is a Senior Toxicology Consultant with VERITOX®, Inc. Dr. Austin has more than 10 years of experience in preclinical drug development, ranging from lead optimization of drug candidates, investigative new drug (IND) applications, and toxicology studies associated with late-stage clinical development. Dr. Austin holds a PhD in Pharmacology/Toxicology from Washington State University (1997) and is certified by the American Board of Toxicology (certification in 2004). His early work focused on the development of new chemical entities (NCEs) for the treatment of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and metabolic disorders. He was responsible for implementing a cardiovascular telemetry system in rodents and developing analytical methods (immunoasays, HPLC) to aid lead optimization of drug candidates. Dr. Austin then worked as a Study Director at Covance, directing GLP toxicity and safety pharmacology studies for a variety of drugs in numerous animal models with both small-molecule and protein-based therapeutics via multiple routes of exposure. His GLP study experience ranges from short-term/acute toxicity studies through 2 year carcinogenicity studies, with a particular emphasis on parenteral drugs. Dr. Austin was most recently a Toxicologist at ICOS Corp., where he was responsible for designing and implementing pre-GLP and GLP toxicology programs in support of IND and clinical development programs (primarily oncology indications). Dr. Austin advanced drug candidates into the clinic by working in product development teams with representatives from clinical, CMC, quality control, chemistry, and regulatory affairs. A significant amount of Dr. Austin’s time was also devoted to evaluating potential licensing opportunities. He served as a toxicology/ADME expert in assessing potential licensing candidates and participated in numerous due diligence evaluations to provide senior management with comprehensive information about partnership/licensing opportunities.
